Dickens of a Christmas Student Program

Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations and David Copperfield - just a few of the novels that have made Charles Dickens an internationally celebrated author. A liberal middle class gentleman, his novels, and indeed his own life, reflected the poverty, wealth and corruption of the Victorian era. He is without a doubt one of the most popular and enduring authors in the English language.

His short stories and novels have been adapted for countless award-winning stage, film and television productions. Since 1983, we have had the good fortune to produce an annual Charles Dickens Victorian Christmas celebration in Mount Hope Mansion featuring Dickens' sharp depiction of the eccentricities of mankind which we weave into dramatic caricature.

Christmas, 1843. Queen Victoria, still a beautiful young woman of 23, and her husband Prince Albert have decided to throw the holiday celebration of the century, and you’re invited! Join the royal couple as they share their favorite Christmas stories and traditions… and who knows? Rumor has it that a certain up-and-coming English author might just drop by, with a story that Victoria swears will change Christmas forever…

“A CHRISTMAS CAROL”

The 2008 smash hit is back; come help celebrate a Mt. Hope Yuletide tradition. Join Charles Dickens as he brings this classic Christmas story to life with the aid of the royal butler, Higgins. But be warned… Charlie loves getting his friends involved… so you might end up as part of the story yourself!

“CHRISTMAS WITH THE DICKENSES”

Step into the parlour with Charles Dickens’ wife and daughter as they get swept up in the Christmas revelry! Victorian-era parlour games, holiday poetry, and even a bit of gift-giving for those brave enough to accept the Dickens Christmas Trivia Challenge…

“STILLE NACHT”

A wonderful story from Prince Albert’s home country of Germany, based on the true tale of how one of the most famous Christmas carols in history was written. It’s a perfect holiday offering, filled with beautiful music, hysterical comedy, and a touching reminder of the spirit of the season.
