From the beginning of his career, Edgar Allan Poe considered himself first and foremost a poet. In his prose, Poe is best remembered for his tales of psychological horror and suspense. In is poetry, however, we find the true artist struggling with the themes that were closest to him -- themes of the loss of childhood, innocence, alienation, despair, death, and love lost.

Today, more than 150 years following his death, Poe remains one of the most talked about, written about and argued about writers of American literature. Perhaps it's little wonder then the success, since 1989, of the annual Mansion celebration of Poe's prose and poetry in what we continue to dub "Poe Evermore."

When your students come to Poe Evermore they will experience the mystery and macabre of the following:

The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether

An unwitting visitor spends an uneasy evening in a French Madhouse, where it soon becomes apparent that the patients have taken over, led by the former superintendent, who is now quite mad, himself! The play is performed in Mount Hope’s trademark interactive style.

The Tell Tale Heart

Watch, spellbound, as a heartless murderer confesses to a cold-blooded crime and the
paranoid delusions that led to an inexorable, inevitable downfall.

Berenice

A vivacious young woman becomes mysteriously ill until the only part of her remaining healthy is her teeth which her trance-prone cousin begins to covet… even on her deathbed… and especially after her death…

The Raven

Poe’s classic poem of a love lost, a living death and a persistent, unwelcome tap-tap-tapping avian visitor. Of course, when the Master of the Macabre is about, other tales of woe and unrequited love are sure to follow.
